A Trilobite beetle of the Platerodrilus genus, photographed in Mt. Kinabalu national park, Borneo.
This species of the
family Lycidae is found in tropical forests of India and South-east Asia.
Females measure about 40 – 80 mm in length and retain a larval form as adults Both
females and larvae have a flattened, dark body with large scales over the head,
which look like trilobites, hence their informal name trilobite beetle. Males,
on the other hand, are much smaller (8 – 9 mm) and resemble other beetles.
First discovered back in
the 1800s, commonly referred to as net-winged beetles. A major characteristic
of many net-winged beetle species is that their males and females look entirely
different.
