Dogs can smell when we're stressed, study suggests

Credit: © rodimovpavel / stock.adobe.com The physiological processes associated with an acute psychological stress response produce changes in human breath and sweat that dogs can detect with an accuracy of 93.75%, according to a new study published this week in the open-access journal  PLOS ONE  by Clara Wilson of Queen's University Belfast, UK, and colleagues. Odors emitted by the body constitute chemical signals that have evolved for communication, primarily within species. Given dogs' remarkable sense of smell, their close domestication history with humans, and their use to support human psychological conditions such as anxiety, panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), researchers wondered whether dogs could be sensing chemical signals to respond to their owners' psychological states. In the new study, the researchers collected samples of breath and sweat from non-sm

India develops its first cervical cancer vaccine

From - Reuters News, Edited by - Amal Udawatta, Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India (SII), the world's biggest vaccine maker, speaks during an interview with Reuters in the Alpine resort of Davos, Switzerland May 23, 2022. REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann/File Photo NEW DELHI, Sept 1 (Reuters) - The Serum Institute of India (SII), the world's biggest vaccine maker, has developed the country's first cervical cancer shot that will hit the market soon, the company and the government said on Thursday. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women globally, with an estimated 604,000 new cases and 342,000 deaths in 2020, according to the World Health Organization. About 90% of the new cases and deaths worldwide occurred in low- and middle-income countries that year. Two human papillomavirus (HPV) types, 16 and 18, are responsible for at least 70% of cervical cancers, and India's Department of Biotechnology said the Indian vaccine would work on HPV types 16 an

Brain stimulation boosts memory for a month

By James Gallagher, Health and science correspondent, Edited by Amal Udawatta IMAGE SOURCE, GETTY IMAGES Scientists have discovered they can boost people's memory for a least a month by harmlessly stimulating parts of the brain with electricity. Volunteers performed better at word memorisation games, which tested both their immediate "working" memory and their long-term memory, experts found. Exactly what the results mean for day-to-day life is still unclear. But ideas range from helping old people cope with memory decline, to treating disease and aiding exam preparation. Dr Robert Reinhart, from Boston University, described the stimulation technique as "an entirely different approach to isolating and augmenting parts of the brain" which offered "an entirely new realm of potential treatment options". People on the trial wore a cap filled with electrodes. A controlled electrical current, which feels similar to an itch or a tingle, was then used to pre
